How To Make Your Password Stronger

How Secure Is My Password

We live in an era where being connected to the internet is considered a basic human right. These days, the cost of internet has gone down drastically. As a result, more and more people are coming online. But internet doesn't mean only monotonous reading of information available on a particular website. We have emails, chat forums, social media, streaming services, payment services and what not. All these require one to have an account with their website. These days those accounts are of utmost importance. We have to make sure that they are not used by any third party. For this, we use passwords.

But how careful are you when you create a password for any given website? Most of the people are in the impression that creating a password will make their accounts secure. They discount the fact that weak passwords severely hamper the security of their accounts.

So how to make passwords strong? You can take the below mentioned steps while creating a password, to make it strong.

1. Use a combination of upper-case and lower-case letters, along with numbers-

Do not just use letters or just numbers. Use both. And employ both capital letters and small letters. That way you are making the variation complex to be cracked.
2. Use symbols-

Use asterix, colon, @ symbols to make the password stronger.

3. Use vernacular words in English letters-

Attackers use a technique called brute force to guess your passwords. It is nothing but inputting hundreds of phrases in the hope that your password is one such phrase. Using vernacular word instead of English words significantly reduces the chance of a brute force attack's success.
4. Make it Large-
Use at least 12 to 14 characters while making password. A large password makes it harder for password cracking software to reveal your password in a small amount of time. The more characters your passwords have, the more hard ( sometimes exponentially hard) it is for the software to crack them.
5. Dont use consecutive numbers-

12345, 56789 type of passwords are strict no-no. Please, these are the first few combinations that even free low lowgrade password cracking software uses.

6. Dont use same characters consecutively-

1111, aaaaa, zzzzz are bad passwords. This would be a juvenile thing to do.

7. Dont use the same password in every website-

That way if the attacker cracks your password of a particular account of yours, all your accounts become vulnerable. And change your passwords often. Once in December 2018, Quora was hacked. I did not know then. I used to not change my passwords often. I changed my password of my Quora account in the middle of 2019. Until then, it was at the mercy of the hackers.

After the advent of internet, our identities have become twofold - a. Real Identity and b. Virtual Identity. Just like we protect our real identity with care and attention, we have to protect our virtual identity with the same vigour.
